Tiny changes, big results

Recently i’ve been reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. An interesting read for sure, and to be taken with a grain of salt like all self-help ‘this-book-will-change-your-life’ type books. The main premise of the book is that small changes over time, rather than big unattainable changes, will make a difference to your life.

I thought about 1 way I could implement this tiny change idea, and after reading another snippet of info somewhere that said drinking coffee on an empty stomach causes your body to release cortisol (the key stress hormone) and then your body is in stress fight or flight mode for the rest of the day. Disclaimer: No idea if that’s true or not. Bloody TikTok. BUT as a habitual coffee drinker first thing in the morning, I thought well crap, I don’t want that do I? I’m stressed enough as is.

So - enter tiny change number one. Eat breakfast and drink water before coffee.

Psychologically, this has been much easy for me than trying to go on a diet or cut anything out. I’m not removing anything, i’m actually adding something in, and better yet, i’m adding food IN (I love food - more on that later). And so far - two weeks in - it’s going pretty well! During the work week that is. I still need to work on my weekends, as im a sucker for grabbing a coffee after pilates before having breakfast #basicbitchforever.

Benefits noticed so far:

I’m more productive at work. This could also be attributed to the beginning of a new year, but throughout the day, i’ve noticed less spikes in boredom or anxiousness, and more focus.

I’m less hungry throughout the day. This is a great benefit, because it is meaning that im having smaller lunches, and then smaller dinners. We like portion control. Portion control is our friend. So that’s a win.

So far so good. I’ll keep you posted on anything else, but for now, tiny change = win in my book. Thanks James.
